The year 2004 was full of challenges and achievements in the effort to make health, education and protection and reality for children everywhere. The UNICEF 2004 highlights our work with partners in 157 countries worldwide. It puts the spotlight on key achievements in each of our priority areas: girls’ education, early childhood development, immunization plus, HIV/AIDS and child protection; also addressed are the threats to children brought on by some of the natural and man-made emergencies that unfolded in 2004, as well as UNICEF’s response.

State of the World´s Children 2005,

The State of the World´s Children focuses on childhood, defined as the state and condition of a child’s life. The Convention of the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, offers a new definition of childhood based on human rights. Yet for hundred of millions of children the promise of childhood that undergirds the Convention already appears broken as poverty, armed conflict and HIV/AIDS threaten their survival and development. The report examines these three key threats in detail, and offers a comprehensive agenda of action to combat them. It concludes by calling on all stakeholders – governments, donors, international agencies, as well as communities, families, business and individuals – to reaffirm and recommit to their moral and legal responsibilities to children.

The State of the World's Children 2004 focuses on girls' education as one of the most crucial issues facing the development community today. Birth Registration Right From The Start

This Digest looks at birth registration – a fundamental human right that opens the door to other rights, including education and health care, participation and protection. It explains why the births of more than 50 million babies go unregistered every year. In legal terms, these children do not exist and their right to an official name and nationality is denied. Their access to basic services may be severely jeopardised and they may find themselves more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. The effects can last a lifetime, with the unregistered adult unable to vote, open a bank account or obtain a marriage licence. Non-registration also has serious implications for the State. Put simply, countries need to know how many people they have and how many there are likely to be in the future, in order to plan effectively. Young Voices
Opinion Survey of Children and Young People in Europe and Central Asia (engl.)
Von Dezember 2000 bis Februar 2001 wurden 15.200 ausgewählte Kinder und Jugendliche über ihre Erfahrungen und Einstellungen zu Familie, Schule und Politik sowie über ihre Leitbilder, Hoffnungen und Ängste befragt. Sie repräsentieren die Meinung von rund 93 Millionen jungen Menschen im Alter von neun bis 17 Jahren in der Region. Die Umfrage ermöglicht erstmals den Vergleich der Meinungen von Heranwachsenden in 26 Staaten Mittel- und Osteuropas, den GUS-Staaten, der baltischen Staaten mit ihren Altersgenossen in neun Ländern Westeuropas, darunter auch Österreich. Die Befragung wurde im Auftrag von UNICEF und der Organisation für Sicherheit und Zusammenarbeit (OSZE) vom Meinungsforschungsinstitut GFK durchgeführt. "Junge Menschen brauchen mehr Möglichkeiten, sich Gehör zu verschaffen. Wir müssen sie ermutigen, sich an den Entscheidungsprozessen, die ihr Leben betreffen, zu beteiligen," erklärte UNICEF Exekutiv-Direktorin Carol Bellamy bei der Vorstellung der Studie.

A Decade of Transition

The MONEE project Regional Monitoring Report of the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre is a unique source of information on the social side of the transition taking place in the 27 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Each year’s Report contains an update on the social and economic changes affecting people in the region and includes a wealth of data in a detailed Statistical Annex. This year’s Report provides a review of the first 10 years of transition, exploiting the fact that data are now available on many issues that cover the entire 1990s. The core chapters examine the record of the decade in four key areas affecting human welfare: income inequality and child poverty, health, education, and child protection. An introductory chapter analyses key economic and demographic trends. In each case, the Report summarizes developments to the end of the decade, discussing both the outcomes measured with statistical data and the policy options.

Economic growth and child poverty in the CEE/CIS and the Baltic states. engl, 129 p.
Innocenti Social Monitor 2004 reviews recent socio-economic trends in the 27 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. It examines child poverty in an integrating world from four different perspectives: Economic Growth and Child Poverty looks at children in poverty related to family income and indicates that since the late 1990s steady economic growth has reduced the proportion of people living in households with incomes below national subsistence minima. Despite years of good intentions and more recent economic growth, large numbers of children in the region remain trapped in poverty. Economic Integration, Labour Markets and Children finds that integration into the global economy, as measured by trade and volumes of foreign direct investment, has grown across the region, but is particularly concentrated in the new EU member countries. It shows that conventional market adjustment mechanisms have impoverished children in disadvantaged areas of many countries. Migration Trends and Policy Implications finds that migration has grown greatly in the region since the 1980s; reasons for this upsurge include the fragmentation of nations from eight countries into 27 at the start of the 1990s, causing many people to migrate. The article stresses the need for governments in both originating and receiving countries to better manage migration and increase avenues for legal migration across the region. Young People and Drugs: Increasing Health Risks, investigates the health consequences of the use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs by children and young people, particularly the links between drug use and young people’s deaths across the region. Studie über die Rolle der Mütter sexuell mißhandelter und ausgebeuteter Kinder (Friedrich/Akkaya)
Im Auftrag von UNICEF Österreich wurde an der Univ.-Klinik für Neuropsychiatrie des Kindes- und Jugendalters, unter Leitung des Vorstandes, o.Univ.Prof. Dr. Max H. Friedrich und von Fr. Dr. Türkan Akkaya eine Pilotstudie durchgeführt, in der die Rolle der Mütter von sexuell mißhandelten und ausgebeuteten Kindern untersucht wurde. Zielrichtung der Studie war es, klare Aussagen darüber zu erhalten, wie Müttern am effizientesten Hilfe geboten werden kann, wenn sie einen Mißbrauch ihres Kindes ahnen, vermuten oder von ihm wissen.
